Doosan Robotics has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in US-based automation engineering company ONExia, marking a significant step in its strategy to become a global provider of intelligent robotic solutions.
The company’s board of directors approved the purchase on 28 July, acquiring an 89.59% share in ONExia for approximately US$25.9m. The deal includes both a stock purchase agreement and participation in a capital increase.
Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Pennsylvania, ONExia specialises in end-to-end automation services, ranging from system design and manufacturing to implementation.
The company has established a strong footprint in sectors including manufacturing, logistics, and packaging. In recent years, it has developed collaborative robotic systems tailored to high-demand end-of-line (EOL) processes such as palletising, box assembly, and packaging. ONExia has reported an average annual sales growth of around 30%.
The acquisition provides Doosan Robotics with access to ONExia’s engineering expertise and over two decades of automation data and project execution experience.
These resources are expected to support the development of AI-enabled robotics systems and improve the company’s competitiveness in global markets.
In parallel, Doosan Robotics is increasing its investment in internal research and development. It is in the final stages of recruiting specialists in AI, software development, robotics R&D, quality assurance, and corporate strategy. The company is also restructuring its R&D division to place greater emphasis on AI, software, and humanoid robotics technologies.
A new R&D Innovation Centre is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of this year. The facility aims to support ongoing innovation and provide an optimised environment for development activities.
Doosan Robotics’ latest initiatives reflect its broader ambition to lead in what it describes as the emerging “Physical AI” era, a convergence of robotics, data, and artificial intelligence technologies aimed at transforming industrial operations.
