Online grocery store Picnic has opened a new highly-automated fulfilment centre in Oberhausen, Germany, as part of its strategy to expand within the German market.
The facility was developed in collaboration with TGW Logistics, marking the second joint project between the two companies following an earlier site in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Amersfoort, Picnic operates in the Netherlands, Germany, and France. The company uses a mobile app for ordering and delivers groceries using electric vehicles.
The Oberhausen facility is located in the Ruhr region and features a shuttle warehouse with approximately 1,500 autonomous robots. These manage storage and retrieval of goods across three temperature zones: frozen (-18°C), chilled, and ambient (up to +20°C). The setup is designed to maintain product quality while supporting high throughput.
The centre includes more than 60 ergonomic picking stations and a zone-picking area focused on high-volume items. Orders are consolidated in a buffer system before being loaded into transport frames using a robot-assisted process developed by TGW. According to the company, the site is capable of handling up to 33,000 customer orders per day.
Innovative applications of technology in retail and e-commerce, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, automotive, transport & logistics, and more will be celebrated at the Robotics & Automation Awards on 29 October 2025 at De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.
